Whether you're budgeting for upcoming projects or simply wondering which jobs should take priority, we’ve got some insight that may help. Your plan will depend on your home’s specific needs, but this general guideline can help you get started.

A common question we hear is: where should you start? We always recommend beginning from the top down. There’s no point in replacing your windows if the roof is in poor condition. Of course, there are exceptions. If something’s actively leaking or causing damage, it should jump to the top of your list.
How to Spot Early Signs of Exterior Damage
Spotting exterior damage early can help prevent costly repairs later. Whether you're maintaining your roof, siding, or gutter system, regular inspections are key to protecting your investment.
Start by scanning for curling or missing shingles, which often signal aging or worn roofing. Granules in the gutters are another red flag. They indicate shingle deterioration and potential water infiltration. After heavy rain or winter storms, check for sagging gutters, water stains, or peeling paint around the roofline and siding. These are common signs of moisture buildup and poor drainage.
On siding, look for soft spots, warping, or buckling. These often point to hidden moisture or rot behind the panels. Cracks and holes may seem minor, but they can let in water and pests, leading to bigger problems. Faded or chipped paint can also be a sign of UV damage or underlying moisture issues.
Don’t overlook foggy windows, mold, or mildew on exterior surfaces. These can indicate poor ventilation or water intrusion, and they pose both cosmetic and health concerns.
Exterior issues like roof wear, siding damage, or drainage problems can escalate quickly if left unchecked. Spotting early signs can help prevent more serious repairs down the line. At Classic Roofing & Siding Ltd, we’ve seen how timely maintenance makes a big difference. If you’re noticing any of these symptoms, it may be worth having a professional take a closer look.

1. Roofing
Replacing your roof is generally less expensive than replacing your home's siding. If you're considering both, it's best to start with the roof before tackling the siding. An aging or damaged roof can lead to problems that siding alone won’t solve.
Most roofing projects begin with removing old shingles and inspecting the sheathing. Underlayment is then installed, along with an ice and water shield for added protection. Flashing is applied to vulnerable areas before the new shingles go on. In some cases, resheathing is also required before installation.
2. Roofline System
Drip edge, fascia, soffits, and gutters are essential parts of a home's roofline system. Together, these components manage water and help protect your home from weather-related damage.
If upgrades are needed, we recommend completing your eavestroughs, downspouts, leaf guards, drip edge, soffits, and fascia in one coordinated project. A well-functioning gutter system not only preserves your roofline but also safeguards your home and landscaping by preventing pooling and erosion around the foundation.
The most important repairs are always the ones that protect against the elements, prevent further damage, and stop leaks. After that, it's time to start addressing your siding, windows, and doors.

3. Siding
Siding acts as a protective shell, shielding your home from the elements while channeling water away. Materials like vinyl and wood are installed in overlapping layers to allow for expansion and prevent leaks. High-quality insulated vinyl siding also adds warmth, with an R-value between 2.0 and 4.0. In construction, R-value refers to how well a material resists heat flow. Higher numbers mean better insulation.
This is also a good time to check for rot beneath your old siding. We'll assess any existing damage once everything is exposed. Making necessary repairs helps weatherproof your home and keeps pests out. That’s why we recommend starting repairs with the most weather-exposed areas. It ensures we identify and address the source of moisture. Often, the issue originates from above the siding, such as clogged gutters, damaged flashing, or a leaky roof. If rot is found, it's best to prioritize repairs before it spreads and causes more serious damage.

4. Windows and Doors
New windows and doors reduce drafts and air leaks, helping keep indoor temperatures stable and comfortable all year. Replacing old windows and exterior doors boosts energy efficiency, security, and curb appeal. Signs it's time for repair or replacement include drafts, damage, broken seals, cracked caulking, fogging, or trouble opening and closing them.
New windows are rated by their R-value, which measures insulation. Higher values mean better heat resistance. Double-pane windows usually range from R-3 to R-5, while triple-pane options can reach R-6 to R-9. Features like gas fills, coatings, and frame type influence the final rating.
By tackling projects in the right order, you’ll protect your investment, avoid costly surprises, and keep your home looking its best, both inside and out.
