Do I Need a Permit or Not? What You Need For Exterior Renovations in the HRM

Permits are occasionally needed before Classic Roofing & Siding Ltd can get started on your project. Those can include a Building Permit, a Decking Permit, or a Sidewalk Permit. A Sidewalk Permit only applies if you live in an urban setting, like downtown Halifax. Most of our exterior renovation work doesn't require a permit. For instance Window Installation, Siding, Roofing, and exterior home repairs don't require the homeowner to get a permit.

To verify whether or not your project requires a permit please check here: https://www.halifax.ca/home-property/building-development-permits/house-home-permits This will usually apply to projects like installing a pool, adding a new addition or a backyard suite, fencing, a new deck, lot grading, a solar collector, or building a new house. An existing build will generally require a permit when structural changes take place. That includes changes to the interior and exterior walls, existing plumbing being rerouted or changed, altering a shed or garage over 20m sq, or drywall repairs required to fire separations.

Although it's not exactly permit related. Another thing to keep in mind is that if any work is being done within 6m (approximately 20ft) of the power line connected to your hour house, your power lines will have to be wrapped. This is done for the safety of the workers and your home. Simply, contact Nova Scotia Power by calling 1-800-428-6230 to request they come and wrap the power lines on your property. They typically respond within 10 business days, and this service is provided at no cost to you. Once your project is complete and the lines no longer need to be covered. You'll need to reach back out to NS Power and schedule the removal of the line wrapping.

We also like to mention that if you are getting Siding installed and you have an oil tank. Take a look to see if there is enough clearance (1ft) behind it for our crew to replace the Siding. If not, call your oil company to have them drain your tank in order for it to be moved. They may also offer the service of moving it temporarily while the work takes place. If your oil company doesn't offer it themselves, ask them to refer you to a provider that does. They usually know the right place to ask!
